How to get a toll-free number

Step by step

1. Decide toll-free, local or both

   National reach and free calls for customers: toll-free. A familiar area code or overseas callers: local. Many businesses run both on one plan. The decision guide.

2. Search the inventory

   Type a word (PLUMBER), a partial number (555) or nothing to browse. Try the newer prefixes when 800 is taken; they cost the same.

3. Pick a plan by minutes

   Estimate monthly minutes (a typical small business uses 200 to 800). Starter covers 750; move up when overage would cost more than the next plan.

4. Check out

   Name, address, phone, card. Taxes and fees are shown before you pay; the first month is prorated to the 1st.

5. Set where it rings

   Your cell, office, a hunt group or the app. Add forwarding rules for after hours, turn on voicemail to email, name the campaign for analytics.

6. Publish it

   Website, ads, vehicles, email signature. Use a different number per channel to see which one works.
